When I was starting off in a creative career, I used to hate it when people call me 'An Artist'. In my mind, if things are done carefully to do good for society and not for yourself, it is bound to be called Design no matter what kind of media that might be.
I have recently watched an interview of Emily from BODE in which she mentioned she started with mens collection as making womens felt as if she was making things for herself. At GIRAGIRA, I am designing for a certain type of demographics that includes someone like myself. I.e. I am designing for myself. The reason why I have started off creating sketches of baseball hats January this year was because there were nothing that I truly found it worth the hassle of purchasing out there. The reason why I have been making a handmade tote bag from raw materials is I find it joyful and almost therapeutic to tinker with my own hands.
Coming back the distinction between Art and Design, what we do at GIRAGIRA pretty much falls into the former than the latter, Art. But does it really matter? These are just labels right?
